Coastal Pollution

My research paper is struggling on thesis to say the least. My friend Lee looked into different viewpoints, yet in unison everyone with pollution agrees that it needs to be stopped. There are different. MY paper is on the affects that pollutions have on the coastlines of oceans. Some sources have different opinions.
1. Long term oil spills and pollution create death to marine ecosystems (Boesch)
2. Coastal shorelines destroyed by overdevelopment’s on the coast. (Diaz)
3. Coastal pollution has created bacterial issues that affect people’s health that enter into the ocean. (Grant)
4. Storm drains have had an effect on coastlines , not just from the coast storm drains, but from the inland areas too.(Haile)

Effects of Fathering

My topic is on the importance of fatherhood and how different cultural methods of fathering effect the children. There is a lot of new information about exactly how having a father really impacts the way a child grows up. I am using American and Japanese examples of fathering to compare and contrast them.

1. Japanese fathers tend to spend majority of their time at work instead of with their children. As a result, most of the nurturing and teaching comes from the Japanese mothers (Women's International Network News).

2. There is evidence of a great movement of experts and proffessionals trying to convince fathers of all cultures (but between the two I am comparing more to the Japanese) of the importance of spending as much time with their kids as possible (Sanger).

3. Different parenting styles have a big impact on children and how they grow and develop. Therefore, some styles are much better than others (Maccoby).

4. Severe developmental problems occur in Japanese children who do not have a strong relationship with their father (MASAKO ISHII-KUNTZ).

Outsourcing

My research paper does not have a definite thesis yet.  The topic is outsourcing however and I am thinking about not addressing whether it is good or bad.  But playing both sides of the spectrum.  I will talk about the good things and the bad things about it.  That's the plan.

Viewpoints

It is horrible.  Many people think that outsourcing is just a way for companies to get cheap labor so that they can make more money for themselves.  They feel that it takes away US jobs and puts people out of work.  (source: Cooper)

Outsourcing is good.  Some people argue that it is actually better for the economy even though some say that it takes away jobs.  (source: Feenstra)

Some people have a combination of two different beliefs.  They think that in some ways outsourcing can be very efficient but they also at the same time feel that it is unfair to the US workers who literally have to train their replacements.  (source: Drezner)

Many people feel that outsourcing is good because it causes the prices of things sold in the US to go down and this helps the overall economy. (source: Morrison)

My personal viewpoints

My topic that i am going to write my issues paper on is about the positive and negative effects having nuclear power become the new dominant energy source in the US.

Here the differing view points on this subject:

1. Many look down on nuclear power because of the potentially harmful radioactive materials Nuclear power subsequently employs. (Abrahamson, Cooper, Hanson, Mossman, Whitford

2. Some people are just completely skeptical that increasing nuclear power will really help the American economy. They think it is hoax that corporate companies are making to increase revenue in yet another alternative energy source. Also it may be just a ploy to make lots of nuclear weapons.(Bryce, Solon)

3. Other people pronounce that such nuclear increases will vastly improve electricity in cities and will become much cleaner and more powerful energy source. (Cooper, Griffin, Lake, Mossman, "Nuclear Hot Streak", Rusher, Sjoberg Weeks, Whitford, Wheeler)

4. Even more people think that beyond the potential hazard of nuclear power, that having a plant near a city causes deep psychological effects on people. (Levi, Schoberg)

5. Some people are very pro-nuclear power because it is a lot more efficient and creating usable energy, but are leery about employing it on a large scale because of the impact it could have on ozone. (Olwell)

Major Viewpoints

My topic is an idea called DNS-SEC, that is supposed to fix security problem in the DNS system. DNS is what allows you to type "byu.edu" and get connected to a computer that BYU set up to run their website. Without DNS you'd have to memorize a long series of numbers that make up BYU's network address. So DNS just makes the internet easier to use by giving things meaningful names instead of random numbers.

The problem is the DNS also makes it possible for computers to be attacked and their identities stolen. So an attacker could shut down BYU's website and make it inaccessible, or they could pretend to BE BYU, and collect all sorts of personal information they shouldn't have access to.

DNS-SEC supposedly makes that impossible, but it also slows down a network to the point that it could take minutes instead of seconds for a web site to load. The system is getting better over time as more people work on it, but the debate revolves around how, when, and by whom DNS-SEC should be adopted.


1. National governments should adopt this system on all their public infrastructure because the system is "out of control" and critical for society.
