Greek Life

Topic: Having sororities and fraternities at BYU

Brigham Young University is a prestigious school in which the majority of students continually strive to be the best of the best. Fraternities and sororities give students more opportunities to do this. Greek life provides leadership positions within each chapter and many members also hold leadership positions on campus. Positions such as president and treasurer look impressive on resumes and they set you apart from the other students. All but two presidents of the United States since 1825 (when fraternities and sororities were first established) have been members of fraternities. Their commitment to Greek life by maintaining high GPA’s and holding difficult and demanding leadership positions has helped these men achieve the unimaginable. The doors that will be opened to students in fraternities and sororities will help them exceed in college and later in a profession.

Questions:

1. Do I present a strong argument that is convincing?
2. What improvements should be made for my paper to appeal to the reader more?

I think your argument is pretty convincing. I like that you backed up your opinion with actual fact because it strengthens your opinion. The fact also makes the paper a little more interesting.

I found that your side of the argument is pretty convincing, but you don't really talk about the other side of fraternities, or why perhaps BYU does not like these organizations. You paragraph is good and solid, but when writing the rest of your paper I would just keep in mind the other things such as drinking and partying that also come along with sororities and fraternities. Also consider why sororities and fraternities are not allowed at BYU and consider how parents and administrators might perceive your idea.

I really don't think that there are any good fraternities out there. I have been to the U of O and its all about drinking and sex. BYU should not have them.

I agree that greek life being exceptable. They can be all about drinking Apple Beer instead of Bud Light or any other alcoholic beverages. I think that a group coming together and fellowshiping each other is necessary for individuals who maybe in the past have not been able to have friends or a bonding experience with a group of simialr beliefs. I agree. SAE for life

I like your argument and everything it's just I don't really know what to think. I mean I don't think you are necessarily not telling the truth but all the frats and sororities I'm familiar with just encourage drinking and unruly behavior. I was completely unaware of the GPA requirement until this paper. So if that's true than more power to you!

Jordan, I too am writing on frats and I found it helpful to write about why we need them in addition to clubs. I ran into the problem that everything that frats do clubs do as well, so instead of convincing them on how frats will do whatever it is you will be arguing better, but how they will help.
