This article exhibits an opinion on a new abortion law passed by congress. The bill states that it is a federal crime to help pregnant teens cross state boundaries in order to have an abortion. Violators of this law will be subject to a fine of $100,000 or up to a year in prison. The author exclaims that by doing this they are not helping teens, but punishing them. The idea is set forth that perhaps instead of punishing teens who are pregnant, we should be trying to prevent teen pregnancies instead.
It is important to understand that this particular case is being argued because it brings up the valuable point that instead of punishing those already pregnant, we should be trying to prevent teens from becoming pregnant in the first place.
This article is directed towards the general public, but particularly parents. It is presented in such a way that it will raise the awareness to parents of this bill, and help them to see that instead of trying to prevent their teenagers from becoming pregnant, the government is just punishing them after they have already made the mistake. To parents this could be a very important issue, no parent wants their teen to become pregnant, and the author is trying to say that by inhibiting abortion to state lines that they are hurting both parents and their teenagers.
I am currently working towards becoming a high school counselor and I find abortion in general interesting because I know that there is a possibility I will work with young teens that are considering this option. Through reading different editorials I am able to see many seperate opinions and can therefore make a better judgment as to what I may encounter in the future. I personally do not agree with abortion and am very much against it. Although, like the author, I also think that perhaps by giving a person a fine because they transported a pregnant teen is a bit ridiculous. Number one the person shouldn't agree to helping their child to have an abortion in the first place, and number two they should most definitely not help them to cross state borders to do so, however, that being said, I think that restricting a person from having an abortion may cause them to turn to other options, such as performing an abortion on themselves in which it could be dangerous and perhaps fatal to both the child and the mother. Overall I have come to the conclusion that I do not disagree with this law, however, I agree that our time would be better spent trying to prevent teenage pregnancy rather than trying to fix the problem after the damage has already been done.
