Obama

I cannot imagine the stress of being scrutinized by the whole world and being responsible for a nation that is both divided and undergoing a horrible economy. Barack Obama is that man and must have felt that pressure when preparing to give this speech. I believe that his speech was very successful in addressing many issues that this nation faces, such as the need to be united during this difficult time. Obama accomplishes this by reminding us that we are all part of the same nation, whose citizens in the past have sacrificed so much for us through traveling into an unknown land, working hard in sweatshops, and fighting in wars. He relates that we too continue this journey together. Perhaps most unifying is when he describes the “patchwork” of our nation’s people and the very different backgrounds we have. He acknowledges that we are made up of Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and non-believers. He says that our diverse heritage is a strength and not a weakness. From his speech, Obama inspires everyone individually to participate and be proud of the nation that we are a part of and also gives the nation a hope for a brighter future.

I also liked the "patchwork" analogy. I think it is a better one than the "melting pot" because we are all still different, but when put together it is better than when apart. He (or his staff) definitely know how to paint a pretty mental picture.

I also wonder how difficult and stressful it would be to try to sell yourself to a country in one speech and I think that's one thing many people like about President Obama. He doesn't seem nervous or unconfident ever. He's always got great composure and we need a leader who can remain cool in all situations.

I agree, Obama has always been really good at giving speeches. That is a great quality to have. In the past, if presidents were good speakers, the people were given a lot of hope even if times were bad.

Thank you for reminding me about the extreme pressure comes with being a President. I can't even imagine how stressful that would be. It makes me gain a greater appreciation for all that our Presidents have done. Even if America doesn't always approve, I think we need to remember that they do the best they can.

Obama has been one of the best speakers of the current time. In my public speaking class we're always talking about how he is so cool under all the pressure that comes with being president.
