Bookstore Follow-up

As most of you have already heard, the bookstore director found my blog post of my op-ed on our class blog and asked me to come and meet with him to talk about it. I was pretty nervous about meeting with the director but after talking to several people about it I decided that it was a good idea. Roger Reynolds and his assistant were both very polite and nice to me even though many of my arguments were very strong and were not very nice about the bookstore. It was very interesting to have my ideas and my arguments analyzed and sometimes disintegrated by the facts I was given. By talking to the director I realized that a lot of my arguments were uninformed and were not based upon actual facts. With the new information I was given I was able to redirect my argument to apply to the faculty at BYU and not just to the bookstore.

I never expected this type of an opportunity and I am very grateful for it and how it changed some of my ideas and my views. I tried to find an email address for either the bookstore or the director so that I could send him my updated paper but I wasn't able to find one. They asked me to give them a copy of my finished draft so I think I will print one out and let them read it and get their response. I also posted my op-ed on facebook and the responses I got were all positive and supportive of my arguments. But then again, my paper was not directed toward the students at BYU.

Nicole, (again, thanks to the Google Alert service...)

Becky and I deeply appreciated the time you allowed us to share the Bookstore's story. From a student's perspective, it is quite easy to understand how frustrating the bookstore can seem starting with the high prices for textbooks, to a very unusual textbook refund policy, to this strange thing called textbook sellback (or buyback). I truly empathize with students and their feelings toward the bookstore. That is why I sincerely appreciated you stepping out of your comfort zone and for accepting my offer to listen to the "why's" the bookstore does what it does. Thank you again for coming for a visit!

Yes, we would enjoy reading your paper if you would be willing to share it. My email address is: rr@byu.edu .

Thank you again and we wish you all the best! Sincerely, Roger Reynolds

I think it is so neat that you were able to correspond with the director of the bookstore. What a great opportunity it was for you to not only share your feelings, but also step into the world of a true writer.

It is great that you were able to be informed on your subject after speaking with the director of the bookstore. However, there are still many students that share your frustrations. It is too bad that the bookstore cannot do a better job of informing every student.

What a cool experience Nicole! I would have been so nervous as well. But it is neat that you had the opportunity to become more informed about your issue and maybe refine your argument a little.

That is really cool that you had this opportunity. You wrote your paper and got feedback from your actual target audience. It's funny how many of us think our opinions are right and that we have the best ideas but if we were ever to talk to the people in charge they could tell us why it is how it is. Interesting...
