Chasing Pavements

The thesis of this song is about trying to decide if you should give up or keep trying even though the situation appears to be hopeless. The chorus talks about giving up and chasing pavements. While this song is initially a love song, I think that with the words Adele uses it can be interpreted in other ways. The chorus uses imagery when it says, "Should I give up, Or should I just keep chasing pavements? Even if it leads nowhere." It invoked an image of a sidewalk with no apparent end and you are trying to decide if it is worth it to walk down it anyway. I think people can relate this song to their dreams and wishes. I think this causes the audience to decide if it is worth it to go after their goals despite the risks because we can all relate the imagery she uses.
I also found that this song is built on a rhetorical question: Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements? This question is not really meant to be answered. I think this creates an appeal to logos; it is about thinking through what you want to do and if it is worth it. This causes the audience to think about their hopes and dreams. Each person has to decide at some point whether they can aspire to these goals; it is a question we each have to ask ourselves.
Chasing Pavements by Adele

I've made up my mind,
Don't need to think it over,
If I'm wrong I am right,
Don't need to look no further,
This ain't lust,
I know this is love but,

If I tell the world,
I'll never say enough,
Cause it was not said to you,
And that's exactly what I need to do,
If I'm in love with you,

Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even If I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere

I'd build myself up,
And fly around in circles,
Waiting as my heart drops,
And my back begins to tingle
Finally could this be it

Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even If I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere

I love songs like this. A lot of songs are only good because of the musical value, but I think this one is good just alone. This song really makes you think about life and kind of the whole point of it. Should we just continue chasing pavement? I don't know.

When lyrics can convey a message like this to the audience, I believe the artist has succeeded in their purpose. These lyrics really relate to the listener, and cause them to reflect on what the lyrics are saying to them.

Great analysis. I also love the message of this song and it definitely relates to all of us. The question she asks in this song has crossed my mind many times, especially since I have been at college.
