A Fine Frenzy: Come On, Come Out

Artist: A Fine Frenzy
Song: Come On, Come Out
Album: One Cell in the Sea

Lyrics:
come on, come out
the weather is warm
come on, come out
come on come on

a spot in the shade
where oranges fall
a spot in the shade
away from it all

watching the sky, you're watching a painting
coming to life, shifting and shaping
staying inside, it all goes all goes by

a blanket unfolds,
a blanket to lie
the pieces of gold
they light up your eyes
and now we're alone
and now we're alive

watching the sky, you're watching a painting
coming to life, shifting and shaping
staying inside, it all goes all goes all goes all goes by
stopping the time, the rush and the waiting
leave it behind, shifting and shaping
keep it inside, it all goes all goes all goes all goes by
it all goes passing by all goes passing by
watching the sky, you're watching a painting
coming to life, shifting and shaping
staying inside, it all goes all goes all goes all goes by
stopping the time, the rush and the waiting
leave it behind, shifting and shapingkeep it inside, it all goes all goes by

Analysis:
A Fine Frenzy’s “Come on, Come Out” is a song that motivates and inspires the listener to find joy in the smaller things in life.

The lyricist and lead singer, Alison Sudol, accomplishes such an effect on the listener with her great use of imagery in her writing. Such vivid imagery includes the lyrics “a spot in the shade where oranges fall, a spot in the shade away from it all.” The audience cannot help but picture a serene and calming scene of sitting under a shaded orange tree enjoying getting away from the stresses of the world. Hearing such a phrase encourages an emotional response from the listener. The audience understands that beauty can be experienced from life and that we should take those small opportunities to find happiness.

Sudol also incorporates a metaphor into her writing. The metaphor she uses is “watching the sky, you’re watching a painting coming to life, shifting and shaping.” Here Sudol relates watching the sky to watching a painting being created. This metaphor evokes an emotion to be felt by the listener. The audience sees how something so simple as watching the sky can be as interesting and artistic as watching someone make a painting. Seeing such a new and different perspective on something that we experience everyday galvanizes the listener to want to see life in this same way described.

This song is so full of imagery. The whole poem seems to create one big picture. It causes happy and bright feeling in the mind.

I like how this song paints the picture is such great detail that can allow the listener to really get lost in the song, and understand what the artist is trying to say.

I wish more artists enncouraged others to find joy in the small things of life. It seems as though more people would find joy if they just imagined the sky was painting coming to life.

I think by focusing on the "small, simple" things the feel and emotional response from it is greater. Everyone can identify with it and the imagery is great too.

I really love the message of this song. The metaphor is very affective and causes the audience to realize the small beauties in life that we look past everyday.

I am glad you all liked the message from this song. I definitely recommend listening to A Fine Frenzy. All of their songs are so full of emotion and are generally pretty positive or have a good message in some way. Probably one of my top five favorite artists. Check 'em out.
