"Publishing My Op Ed"

I learned a very important lesson from "publishing" my Op Ed. When we had to analyze a professional paper and compare it to ours, I found that mine was 5 long paragraphs and the professional one was about 15 little paragraphs. I liked the format of the professional one better than my own, so I decided to change mine to look more like it. When I say change mine, I simply mean breaking up my paragraphs into smaller ones by using the "Enter" key on the keyboard. What is the problem with this? I didn't write my essay for this format. My essay was written for a 5 paragraph, one intro, one conclusion, and a body type of essay. If I really wanted my paper to look like the professional one I should have taken a bit more care in breaking up my paragraphs and making sure that they all had a topic sentence and that they support and progress my thesis.
My audience thought that my paragraph divisions were sometimes awkward (this is the reason for the first paragraph) but overall they thought my argument was strong, and in some cases, even said that it could be stronger. Additionally, they thought was topic was relevant and was an issue that needed to be addressed.

That's good that you learned from this experience. I can definitely see how having smaller paragraphs could be beneficial. But it just depends on the situation you are in.
