Op Ed Publishing

I also published my writing on facebook. I wrote about caffeine on campus and had to put a disclaimer for my friends saying that if you didn't go to BYU you probably wouldn't understand it, which is what most people told me. Those that do go here thought that I had a valid argument but that things probably wont change because there is really no reason to do so. My target audience was people familiar with the church and/or BYU and since many of my friends are not, they didn't understand why I wrote about this but had something to say nonetheless, i.e. "I don't drink pop that much anyway." Writing has everything to do with the target audience and I am used to the audience being just the teacher grading it, but this was interesting to see others react to it.

I think it's really neat that although you knew it may not apply to them, you still included your non BYU friends in your post. I found their opinions and feelings interesting and thought it was really cool that they took the time to comment on an issue that may not affect them. By allowing everyone to see it, it also shows that your editorial not only appeals to BYU students, but is fascinating to other students as well.

This is a really good example of how you MUST write to your target audience and really figure out how you can appeal to them. Who knows, maybe some your friends will ask you more questions about the Church after reading your article.

facebook is a great tool. Yes it's fun and what not but really it is quite an amazing network. I wish I invented it. That would be awesome. Even if it doesn't apply to people who don't go to BYU it's a good thing for them to read.
