The Writing Process

I believe that most of the benefit I received from this assignment has been an improvement in my writing process. I used to get the best results from just getting what I instinctively wanted to say out on paper. At best, I would have a simple outline or some brainstorming. I would also never rewrite my whole paper from scratch. This time, however, I made smaller pieces, shared them with others, and then kept their feedback and my original in mind as I started over. I now have more faith in the system of multiple drafts, more courage to share my writing with others as it progresses, and I feel like I am better able to judge between changes that I really should make, and things that I would rather not change. I also focus more on the reader now. I pay attention to what my real point is, and how that comes across to the reader as being a major component of my argument.

I also relied a lot more on the editing and advice of others and this really helped my paper. Not only did it force me to spread out my writing and really think about my ideas, but it also gave me new angles on my ideas provided by others.
